Who is that? You wonder at the unrecognizable haggard woman staring back at you this morning. That woman is a pale, clearly exhausted, replica of your mother, only with matted, stringy hair that’s in dire need of a deep condition. The dark under eye circles and the angry cat scratch running down the side of your face does nothing to help the visual.
Yes, you guessed it. That image you’re scorning at. That’s you!!
As if on cue an infant cry pierces your reverie and your reminded of your night last night. The last 2 nights were a mix of torture and expected mommy obligation, since your little one is teething. When your baby is in pain it is torture for the both of you. And you’re doing all you can to soothe said baby, which means catnapping through the night while sitting up and rocking on demand to your baby’s every whimper.
Beauty drops off the list for Moms in the Trenches
What mom hasn’t been there? But now we’re expected to go into the world, baby on hip, and look fresh faced and fabulous as if you have a personal makeup artist & hairdresser at our disposal. Otherwise we face the pregnant stares of judgment. That last part could just be my own misconception. So, what do you do? How do you face the world outside your home with the fierceness necessary to conquer it?
I often tell moms to set & prioritize time to do those things that make them feel the most beautiful. We each have a different focal point (or problem area) that if left undone would cause a mom to feel less than fabulous. It could be having bushy eyebrows, or unkempt hair, or even fingernails needing a manicure. Whatever it is, make sure to keep up with those appointments.
If it is a part of your daily beauty routine such as washing your face twice a day or putting on concealer, or never leaving home without mascara on. Make a point to do these things before walking out the door, even if it means you’ll be late. Let’s face it, when we skip these things, it causes us to feel less than our best. And to be honest who needs that on top of the exhaustion that is prevalent in being a mom.
What do you do to feel beautiful every day?
With summer right around the corner, my makeup regimen tends to lighten up. Personally, I don’t usually wear a lot of makeup and I prefer to skip foundation on most days, but in the warmer weather I have certain products that are staples and certain practices which are a must do to brave the heat and present a bright and beautiful face to the world. My daily regimen includes a pure cleanser that leaves no residue like Neutrogena or First Aid Beauty facial cleansers. I wear only Vaseline petroleum jelly at night, or a face cream with strong sunscreen like Neutrogena Age-Shield Face Lotion in the morning with mascara, eyeliner, blush for some color, and a tinted gloss or lip pencil with gloss. The lip color is top priority in my makeup bag.
I also make sure to maintain my hair appointments. It simply makes my hair easier to manage on a day-to-day basis, especially when I have little time to devote to taming it in the midst of the daily routine when mom is in high demand. What really tops off my feeling fabulous and fierce is having my nails done. My hands are a problem area for me, because I was not one of those who were born with slender and sleek nail beds and hands. Nope, I have flat, broad fingers and when my hands are left unpolished I do not feel I look my best, and I waste energy being self-conscious about my hands, especially since I talk with my hands. If I’m going to be wildly gesturing at people, my fingers better be something nice to look at, in my opinion.
This is what currently works for me. I’ve switched it up in the past. For example, right after I gave birth to my youngest, I’d switched to using The Honest Company’s cleanser and cream for my face. I loved it. The products were perfect for mine and newborn baby skin since it was made of all natural ingredients and no chemicals. My face would feel so refreshed and not at all weighed down by the cream. It was light with a refreshing, yummy, citrusy smell. The Honest Company has made a name for itself for being a go to brand for products made with organic ingredients and without harsh chemicals. And now they are introducing a diverse skincare & makeup line of the same quality The Honest Company is known for.
How do the Celeb Moms do it?
Jessica Alba, a mom and the co-founder of The Honest Company, shares her beauty secrets that help her feel beautiful each day without much muss or fuss. And no, her beauty regimen is not simplified because she has a makeup artist waiting in her walk-in closet. She Her routine includes adding organic oil to her facial moisturizer. Wow, I don’t’ know about you, but I’d never thought of doing that. I’ve always tried the singular method either oil or moisturizer not the combo. We all know the proclaimed benefits of oil in preventing wrinkles and keeping the skin firm, supple, and youthful looking for much longer. She has some other key tips too! See below:
I’m definitely intrigued by Honest Beauty’s line of makeup products to help moms easily attain their beauty goals all while using products known to be good for you & the environment.
Keep being your mommy awesomeness!
We do this by taking good care of ourselves. Mom is a title that inherently means to care for others. But what about mom? Enough placing mom on the back burner, putting the priority of taking care of oneself at the bottom of the list. Maybe one day mom will be a priority, you know, when you finally have time. I say make time today!
